John William Hughes, Age 22
Corporal, 2802, 6th Battalion, King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment.
John was the son of Mr W Hughes who was the Gas works manager for Dawley.
He had enlisted into the Army in November 1914 before which he had worked as not unsurprisingly a Gas Fitter, He had connections with the Wesleyan Chapel community and was a Tenor singer within the Chapel Choir, and he was also a Boys Scout Brigade Trainer.
John was killed in action in Mesopotamia on the 9th February 1917 and his body was never recovered, His name appears on the Basra Memorial in Iraq on Panel 117.
